Located at Chichen Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Built 600 AD
Dedicated to the Mexican pre-Columbian Deity, the EL CASTILLO is the most spectacular structure of the ancient city of Chichen Itza.
Worshipped for over two millennia, between the Teotihuacan’s civilizations in about 200 BC to the Aztecs in the 16th century. The pyramid has nine levels, which may refer to the nine levels of the Maya underworld. Their calendar also represented: each of the four stairways contains ninety-one steps and when including the top platform, this gives El Castillo 365 steps, one for each day of the year.
Here we can witness another most astronomically aligned building in the ancient world.
