The statue of THE LITTLE MERMAID sits on a rock in the harbor of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.
The sculptor Edvard Eriksen created the statue from the request of Carl Jacobsen (the son of the founder of Carlsberg), who had been fascinated by the ballet of The Little Mermaid fairytale of Hans Christian Andersen.
The statue’s had was modeled after the Primaballerina, Ellen Price. But as she did not agree to model in the nude, the sculptor’s wife Eliane was used for the body. On August 23. 1913 The Little Mermaid was unveiled.
